The AE Solo Exhibitions Program Presents: Sarah Theisen

Greetings AE’ers!

Hope everyone is enjoying the sunny spring weather we’ve been having since our last Solo Exhibitions Program blog post!  Time for some updates on what we’ve been up to since we last spoke -or should that be wrote? :)

Mark Elton was our first artist to present his solo show for the year.  “Between the Lines” had a successful opening at Spring Street Tavern on March 10th – food and fun were had by all as visitors enjoyed the interactive nature of Mark’s carefully curated show.  We at Altered Esthetics are thrilled to announce that, in addition to a successful opening reception, Mark also sold one of the works featured in “Between the Lines.”  This marks the third sale of a Solo Exhibitions Program participants’ artwork since the program’s inception.  Congratulations Mark!

On Saturday, March 31st our Solo Exhibitions Program artists met at AE for their monthly class.  As part of their program requirements, the artists have (almost) monthly meetings on a variety of career-building topics.  Earlier this year they had a comprehensive class on the ins and outs of their solo exhibitions, and on March 31st they had a class on goal setting.  Kate, our program director, led the class, and the artists ended the day triumphantly, each carrying large sheets of paper containing both short term and long term goals they hope to attain.

Our most exciting news to present in this blog post is the upcoming solo show reception for Sarah Theisen, whose show “Portraits of the Mundane” opened April 6th at NE Community Chiropractic (1222 2nd Street NE, Suite 202, Minneapolis, MN 55413).  Below is more about Sarah and her lifelong passion for art, as evidenced in her artist bio:

“Sarah Theisen grew up in St. Cloud, MN where her home and studio now reside.  She attended the College of St. Benedict and graduated Cum Laude with a double major in Art Education and Studio Art with an emphasis in painting and printmaking.”

“Sarah has been in both group shows and juried exhibitions throughout Minnesota and has pieces in both public and private collections.  Sarah was recently named to Altered Esthetics’ Solo Exhibitions Program.”

“Sarah is currently in her fifth year of teaching and in her second consecutive year of teaching middle school art in Eden Prairie, MN.  Sarah has an unmatched passion for art and aspires to pass her enthusiasm to future generations.  She enjoys teaching and is extremely inspired by the fresh perspective her students reveal on a daily basis.”

These paintings of Sarah's in the lobby get the added benefit of being below a skylight - great natural light during the daytime hours at NECC! (Photo by Kate Johnson)

On Thursday, April 8th Dr. Chris Hanson graciously welcomed TeamAE to NE Community Chiropractic (NECC), where Sarah’s solo show was to be installed.  A big crew of enthusiastic supporters came to help Sarah hang her work, including two fellow Solo Exhibitions Program artists, one AE board member, and one helpful and supportive husband!  Also on hand were myself and Kate, to ensure things ran smoothly.  I think we may have had an all-time record on our hand – everything was hung, labeled, and ready for opening day in less than an hour!  NECC loves to host local artists’ work in their space, and already had a great hanging system in place, which made our job a snap!  The light brown of the walls really compliments the natural tones in Sarah’s work.  Her work fills the entire office, and creates a visually stunning space for patients coming to the office.  Chris said that his patients love seeing new works when they come in for their appointments, and was excited to see their reactions to Sarah’s work in the space.

“Portraits of the Mundane” explores objects that are often missed in the bustle of daily life; things that are forgotten, damaged, or ignored.  Sarah embraces these objects’ flaws through her paintings, working directly from photographs to create stunningly life-like paintings.  Her use of captivating color and meticulous attention to detail come together in paintings that are unforgettable.  Her work challenges viewers to reassess whether any object is ever truly “mundane.”

Altered Esthetics is excited to announce the opening reception for “Portraits of the Mundane,” Sarah Theisen’s first solo exhibition, which is to be held at NE Community Chiropractic (1222 2nd Street NE, Suite 202, Minneapolis, MN 55413) on Saturday, April 14th from 6-9pm.  Along with the opportunity to view Sarah’s show will be the chance to speak to the artist herself about her artistic process and her vision for “Portaits of the Mundane.”

Well, this blog post is a wrap!  Hope to see you all at Sarah’s opening on Saturday at NECC!

Meet Ae!

Hello awesome Altered Esthetics friends and supporters,

Believe it or not, our 8th birthday is quickly approaching! If Ae was a third grader, we’d be learning our multiplication tables and how to write our name in cursive.

Around this time of year, we usually begin planning our spring anniversary party and fundraiser – making preparations and soliciting donations for a silent auction and raffle. But the fundraising committee decided to do things a little bit differently this year.

Five years ago when we were awarded our nonprofit status we had a tiny starting board, a very tired founder (me) and a vision and hope for sustainability. Fast forward to 2012, and after a lot of hard work we now have a board made up of EIGHTEEN people who are professionals, art lovers and non-profit enthusiasts. So instead of inviting you to participate in just a fundraiser, we thought it was high time you were formally introduced to the absolutely amazing board of Altered Esthetics.

Altered Esthetics is entirely volunteer driven, and the board is a working, role-based board: everybody has a different specialty and contributes something towards keeping the organization growing. Last year our team contributed over 5,000 hours! Each board member serves a three year term, and trains in their successor.

Before I begin these introductions – I should give you a little disclaimer. The introductions you read here are crafted by me, rather than the individual members themselves (and the pictures are from facebook and LinkedIn.) My hope is that you’ll get to see the board members as I see them – a group of awesome, quirky, wonderful creative people that I’m so very lucky to work with!

Clint Carlson

First on the list is Clint Carlson – IT/New Media Director. Clint is one of our newest members. In addition to working with a lot of nonprofits on their website and media needs, he’s also the Interactive Marketing Consultant & Web Developer at Best Buy.

Hanna Jungbauer

Hanna Jungbauer is our Outreach Coordinator, a new position added in 2011. She’s one of the most outgoing and vivacious members, which makes her a great candidate for increasing Ae’s presence at various Twin Cities events, from the MIX Comics Expo to Red Hot Arts.

Jenna Theis

Jenna Theis is our Gallery Director. Not only does she make sure the day-to-day operations are fluid, she also works with our Gallery Director interns, helping give them hands-on experience in running a nonprofit arts organization.

Amber and Blade

Amber White is our Exhibitions Director – quite possibly the busiest person on our board! In addition to managing our robust schedule of 14 exhibits a year, she also co-chairs the group exhibitions committee and works with our Curatorial Interns as they learn the nuances of exhibitions. An incredibly talented artist herself, she understands the importance of creating a professional, welcoming showing environment and works tirelessly to give artists the best experience possible.

Kari Schuster

Kari Schuster is our Volunteer and Intern Coordinator. Warm and welcoming to the interns and volunteers that come through our doors, she matches them up with the right fit for their needs and passions and helps make sure their experience is worthwhile.

Cassie Pupovac

Cassie Pupovac, Education Director, helped reinstate workshops to Ae’s regular programming – and she did a fantastic job! She helped  create a warm and open community of drawing regulars for “Suit Up,” our monthly costumed drawing event. She also helped coordinate our first framing and educational workshops for artists!

James Powell

James Powell, an incredibly talented illustrator, had been showing at Ae for a few years before he decided he wanted to get more involved. He is currently stepping into the role of Development Director, and is helping coordinate our spring anniversary event. So if you come and have a good time, be sure to thank him and say “hi!”

Pati Hibbard

Pati Hibbard is our board secretary. Incredibly involved with the Twin Cities community, she helps connect Ae to our friends on the St. Paul side, as well as at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts  and the American Crafts Council.

Lahli Trevis

Lahli Trevis is our incoming Volunteer and Intern Coordinator. Exceptionally organized and always willing to help, Lahli created an awesome training manual for interns as they step through the program!

Noelle Bakken

Noelle Bakken has been serving on the Ae board for over four years, and has helped the organization with everything from accounting, to artist outreach, to exhibitions. Not only is she an absolute joy to work with, she’s incredibly supportive of her fellow board members and the organization overall.

Janelle Doyle

Janelle Doyle is our brand-newest board member, and she’s bringing a whole slew of energy and expertise to the Education Director role. We’re excited for her to join the board, and excited for the work that she and Cassie will be doing together in 2012, her first year!

Kate Johnson

Kate Johnson is our Solo Exhibitions Director and possibly one of the most organized people I’ve ever met! Along with Amber and Summer, she helped get our solo exhibitions program running, and her engagement was critical in establishing new Ae partnerships and supporting emerging artists throughout the program.

Cris Halverson

Cris T. Halverson – board chair extraordinaire. Cris, also a working artist, had the difficult task of being the first board chair to follow me after founding the organization. His leadership helped transition the organization fluidly, and his work on committees and board structure is helping re-engage board members and move the organization to the next level.

Miles Johnson

Miles Johnson is our new Artists Relations Director. He’ll be working over the next few years to help support and serve our favorite people – artists! He comes to Ae with a experience in both fine arts and nonprofits – and we’re so grateful he’s joined the board!

Suzanne Pfutzenreuter

Suzanne Pfutzenreuter is our Design Director. Over the past two years, she has helped solidify Ae’s visual branding and identity  tremendously. In addition to being a talented designer, Suzanne is above-and-beyond helpful and super fun to work with.

Lupi McGinty

Lupi McGinty, our Communications Director, helps get the word out about our shows, as well as getting our newsletters out to the masses. She’s also a talented comic artist, writing and illustrating for a number of local and national endeavors.

Summer Scharringhausen

Summer Scharringhausen is our exiting Gallery Director, and she also sits on the Board Development committee. Her guidance and leadership helped shape the working board we have and her insight has been critical to our sustainability as an organization.

Jamie Schumacher

And then there’s me – Jamie Schumacher. (j-me) Nonprofit and arts advocate, spontaneous hugger, and an incredibly proud fellow board member of Altered Esthetics.

So there you have it. How are we able to do so much on such a modest budget? We have amazing people on our board that work hard to make a little go a long way.

I hope that you’re able to join us on April 21st, 2012 for a night of fun, games, and conversation. Come meet our board, be grateful along with us for awesome creative people, and celebrate a wonderful eight years of serving the arts community.

Creatively yours and on behalf of the Ae board,

Jamie Schumacher

The Ae Solo Exhibition Program Presents: Mark Elton

Hello World Wide Webbers!

Altered Esthetics’ Solo Exhibition Program is in full swing, and that means we’ve got lots of busy artists and committee members here at the gallery. AE’s Solo Exhibition Program is supporting seven artists in 2012, its second year.  We wrapped up our inaugural year of the program, which featured nine artists, with a solo showcase here at Altered Esthetics at the end of last year.  For those of you unfamiliar with the program, it serves as a career-launching program for emerging artists in the area.  Through workshops, volunteer events, seminars and solo shows, the program participants gain the skills they need to develop successful artistic careers.  This year’s participants are:

Kristy Childress – Bloomington, MN

Mark Elton – Moorhead, MN

Marnie Erpestad – Minneapolis, MN

Mary Foote – St. Paul, MN

Julia Rice – Minneapolis, MN

Sarah Theisen – St. Cloud, MN

Erica Williams – Minneapolis, MN

Though we love all our new program participants, today’s blog post features Mark Elton.  Mark is the lucky recipient of our first Solo Artist Exhibition of the year, which will be held at Spring Street Tavern (355 N.E. Monroe St., Minneapolis, MN 55413).  Spring Street is one of two fantastic local businesses that have agreed to let AE Solo Exhibition Program artists display at their locations.  Below is a little more about Mark, compliments of his artist bio:

Mark lures visitors with an inquisitive eye (Photo by Mark Elton)

“Mark Elton is a multimedia artist who lives and works in Moorhead, Minn.  His professional experience includes concept design, art direction, and consultancy for publication, film, and web.

In 2007, Mark graduated from Concordia College with degrees in English Writing and Studio Art.  Post-graduation, he supported himself as a freelance illustrator for four years before accepting a position in Marketing and Communications.  Though Mark’s work has been shown in galleries across the country, 2012 will signal his first solo show, ‘Between the Lines,’ an opportunity provided by Altered Esthetics’ Solo Exhibition Program.

Outside of art, Mark likes to challenge himself in whatever way possible.  In November 2011, he completed the National Novel Writer’s Month Challenge, while in September of 2012 he will participate in the Northshore Inline Marathon.”

On Thursday, March 1st, Kate Johnson, the Solo Exhibitions Program Director, Amber White, the Group Exhibitions Director, Mark, and myself installed the show.  We are happy to report that our team hung all 14 pieces in less than an hour – believed to be a new gallery record!  With the addition of labels and an artist bio, Mark’s install was complete.

Mark adds a finishing touch to one of his pieces (Photo by Amy Olson)

“Between the Lines” draws its inspiration from a variety of sources, including fairy tales, science fiction, and technology.  The show features an interactive element, in which viewers are encouraged to find the word represented by or hidden in each work; finding all fourteen in order will reveal a message about the show’s theme.

Mark Elton and Altered Esthetics are excited to present an opening reception for “Between the Lines” on Saturday, March 10th from 6-9pm at Spring Street Tavern.  The opening will include food, fun, and the opportunity to talk with the artist and learn more about his work.

We leave you today with a preview of Mark’s show – one of the works featured in “Between the Lines.”  We’re excited for the year ahead as the Solo Exhibition Program continues to grow!  Hope to see you all at Mark’s opening reception on March 10th.

One week left to submit work to Crossing Borders

In Crossing Borders, Altered Esthetics’ February exhibit, artists  will explore how past and present immigration shapes our cultures, communities, and families.

For example, María Korol will feature “Father and Daughter”, from her series Colombian Paintings.

Colombian Paintings: The series of portraits I call the Colombian paintings were produced in the months of June and July 2010 in the city of Bogotá, Colombia. All the models are residents of a shantytown called Cazucá in the outskirts of the capital. Most of them have been displaced from the Colombian countryside by the civil war and have relocated in the slums. I met them at a non-profit organization called Tierra Viva, where I offered art workshops for children, youth, and women. – María Korol

The deadline for submitting work is December 15th, 2011. You can submit online easily by visiting the Open Calls page here: alteredesthetics.com/events/104/new_show_art
